Balboa Park

April 9, 2018 - June 17, 2018

PLEASE NOTE: There will be no classes on Sunday, April 22nd & Monday, May 28th.

All Balboa Park Campus classes are held in the Casa del Prado Building. Class/Camp specifics are subject to change without notice. Registration is accepted through the first week of the session. However, we are strict about class size and age limits. Students must be at least 3 years old to participate in Pre-K classes, and must be toilet trained.

Cancellations/Refunds: Cash refunds (less $25.00 service charge per child, per class or camp) are available up until seven days prior to the start of class or camp, after which time no refund is given. If Junior Theatre must cancel a class or camp due to insufficient enrollment, any tuition paid will be refunded in full. Note: Once a child has auditioned for a play in Balboa Park, there are no refunds or tuition credit granted. Any discounts must be taken at the time of the order; no retroactive discounts or refunds/credits will be granted.

We offer multi-class and sibling discounts. Call (619) 239-1311 for more information. Please note, no discounts can be taken online.

Acting : Stories on Stage: Doreen Cronin

For Ages Pre- K - Kindergarten

April 9, 2018-June 11, 2018 (Mondays @ 3:30pm - 4:30pm) Balboa Park

Doreen Cronin is the author of the Click, Clack series, The Duck Squad Series, the Bug Diaries, and many more books for young kids. Students in this class will explore introductory acting skills while bringing Cronin’s books to life. Class will culminate with a presentation for parents on last day

Acting : Plays for Young Audiences

For Ages 4th - 6th Grade

April 9, 2018-June 12, 2018 (Mondays @ 4:30pm - 6:00pm) Balboa Park

This class will explore several different plays written for children. As the students explore the “tools of the actor,” they will also prepare to present scenes from various plays for a presentations on the final day of class. This class will give students the opportunity to learn many new plays in one class.

Acting : Monologues for Teens

For Ages 7th - 12th Grade

April 10, 2018-June 12, 2018 (Tuesdays @ 4:00pm - 6:00pm) Balboa Park

Finding a monologue for teens can be a challenge. Long time Junior Theatre teaching Artist Sarah, specializes in picking appropriate material for teens looking to work on audition material

Acting : Mini Play: Toy Story 2

For Ages 1st - 3rd Grade

April 12, 2018-June 14, 2018 (Thursdays @ 3:30pm - 4:30pm) Balboa Park

The class will bring to the stage the well know film. Memorable characters return such as Woody and Buzz Lightyear, in this sequel they are joined by  several new characters—including Jessie Barbie, Stinky Pete and Mrs. Potato Head.

Acting : Contemporary Scenes & Monologues

For Ages 4th - 6th Grade

April 12, 2018-June 14, 2018 (Thursdays @4:30pm - 6:00pm) Balboa Park

Students constantly need Monologues & Scenes for auditions. This class aims to supply all students with personally assigned material from age appropriate plays  and musicals.

Acting : Stories on Stage: Eric Carle

For Ages Pre - Kindergarten

April 14, 2018-June 16, 2018 (Saturdays @ 9:00am - 10:00am) Balboa Park

Eric Carle is easily one of the most well known American children’s book Illustrators, famous for creating The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Join us for one of our most popular classes as we bring the illustrations to life and engage children in the art of storytelling. This class will culminate in a presentation by the students for parents.

Musical Theatre : Mini Musical: Charlie Brown

For Ages Kindergarten - 3rd Grade

April 14, 2018-June 16, 2018 (Saturdays @ 9:00am - 10:00am) Balboa Park

Come join Charlie, Lucy, Schroeder, Sally, Linus & Snoopy as we retell the classic peanuts tale. Students will focus on singing and acting technique to re-tell this fun story for parents on the final day.

Dance : Story Dance: Narnia

For Ages 4th - 6th Grade

April 14, 2018-June 16, 2018 (Saturdays @ 9:30am - 11:00am) Balboa Park

C.S. Lewis’s classic novel inspires this class dedicated to physical story-telling. This class will promote the importance of acting & dance while also focusing on technical dance skills.

Acting : Mini Play: Secret Life of Pets

For Ages 1st - 3rd Grade

April 14, 2018-June 16, 2018 (Saturdays @ 10:00am - 11:00am) Balboa Park

This Acting class based on the 2016 movie will build upon important acting skills while working on a stage version of this popular movie, telling the tale of Max a spoiled terrier who enjoys a comfortable life in a New York building until his owner adopts Duke, a giant and unruly canine. During their walk outside, they encounter a group of ferocious alley cats and wind up in a truck that's bound for the pound. Luckily, a rebellious bunny named Snowball swoops in to save them and they join Snowball and his gang of abandoned pets on a mission against the humans who've done them wrong.

Singing : Voice: Pasek & Paul

For Ages 7th - 12th Grade

April 14, 2018-June 16, 2018 (Saturdays @ 10:00am - 11:30am) Balboa Park

This class will honor the young American songwriting duo and composing team for musical theater, films, and television. Their works include A Christmas Story, Dogfight, Edges, Dear Evan Hansen, and James and the Giant Peach. Their original songs have been featured on NBC's Smash, and in the film La La Land, for which they won both the Golden Globe and Academy Award for Best Original Song for the song. They have easily become the hottest song writing team for contemporary musical theatre.

Dance : Story Dance : Thumbelina

For Ages Pre Kindergarten

April 14, 2018-June 16, 2018 (Saturdays @ 11:00am - 11:30am) Balboa Park

This class will celebrate all budding dancers as we honor the story of Thumbelina, the girl who emerges from inside the blossom. This class will introduce beginning dance technique and work towards a presentation of dance set to the story of Thumbelina.

Acting : Page to Stage: Mr. Popper’s Penguins

For Ages 4th - 6th Grade

April 14, 2018-June 16, 2018 (Saturdays @ 11:00am - 12:30pm) Balboa Park

This class will help prepare students who may be interested in auditioning for our summer production of Mr. Poppers. This will be an acting class focused on building the actor’s skill set, with attention to diction, projection and character development.

Calling all Knights, Pirates & Princesses. We will dance the day away, whether at a ball, under the sea or in a tale as old as time.

Dance : Dance Performance: Moana

For Ages Pre- K - Kindergarten

April 15, 2018-June 17, 2018 (Sundays @ 9:00am - 10:00am) Balboa Park

Gather around as we get inspired by the island sounds! This class will incorporate hula dancing and other Polynesian traditions to tell the story of the newest popular heroine Moana and her journey to finding her identity.

Musical Theatre : Mini Musical: Finding Nemo

For Ages 1st - 5th Grade

April 15, 2018-June 17, 2018 (Sundays @ 9:00am - 10:00am) Balboa Park

This show based on the popular children’s film was musicalized by the songwriting team behind the Frozen musical. This class will focus on singing and acting, and students will work together to present a mini version of Finding Nemo.

Dance : Dance Performance: Footloose

For Ages 7th - 12th Grade

April 15, 2018-June 17, 2018 (Sundays @ 10:00am - 11:30am) Balboa Park

You gotta cut loose, foot loose. Grab your boots and come join us as we celebrate this musical, based on the popular film that follows the story of Ren, a teens who has moved to a town that has banned dancing. Together with his new friends he is determined to liberate the ban. This class will move at a fast past and students will learn choreography to music from the show.

Singing : Mini Musical: The Little Mermaid

For Ages 4th - 6th Grade

April 15, 2018-June 17, 2018 (Sundays @ 10:00am - 11:30am) Balboa Park

Calling all mermaids and sea urchins. Join us under the sea as we learn songs and scenes from the Little Mermaid. This class will present a shortened version of the popular sea tale.

Acting : Story Drama: Where the Sidewalk Ends

For Ages 1st - 3rd Grade

April 15, 2018-June 17, 2018 (Sundays @ 11:00am - 12:30pm) Balboa Park

Written by beloved children’s author Shel Silverstein, Where the Sidewalk Ends is a children's poetry collection that addresses many common childhood concerns and also presents purely fanciful stories. This acting class will focus on physical development of character. We will re-imagine Silverstein’s stories through a devised development of the classes interpretation of his stories.

Dance : Dance Party Through the Decades

For Ages 4th - 6th Grade

April 15, 2018-June 17, 2018 (Sundays @ 11:30am - 12:30pm) Balboa Park

This high energy class will cover a vast range of styles. From swing, to hip hop, this class will explore a different style from week to week. Jazz shoes are recommended.

Dance : Story Dance: Alice in Wonderland

For Ages 1st - 3rd Grade

April 15, 2018-June 17, 2018 (Sundays @ 12:30pm - 1:30pm) Balboa Park

Come explore what lurks beyond the looking glass. This well-known tale has been medicalized providing dazzling music for physical storytelling.

Technical : Sound Design Workshop

For Ages 5th - 12th Grade

May 5, 2018-May 12, 2018 (Saturdays @ 10:00am - 12:00pm) Balboa Park

Want to learn how sound is produced in a theatre? Have you ever used a microphone before? This class will teach students all about the properties included in amplifying sound for a theatrical production. This is a brand new workshop for all our tech interested students.

Acting : Auditioning for Commercials Workshop

For Ages 5th - 12th Grade

May 2, 2018-May 9, 2018 (Wednesdays @ 4:00pm - 6:00pm) Balboa Park

Ever wonder what it takes to audition for a commercial? Join this special workshop led by professional actor Dana, who has been featured in a variety of commercials including nationwide spots for Taco Bell. This class will cover cold reading, slating for camera and how to find out about these auditions.

Acting : Advanced Acting for Film Workshop

For Ages 9th - 12th

April 28, 2018-May 19, 2018 (Saturdays @ 10:ooam - 12:00pm) Balboa Park

Different skills are required for stage acting versus screen acting. This class will focus on the skills necessary to act on film. Students will be filmed during the class so they can watch their work back on a private YouTube page. This workshop will move at a fast pace as part of our Advanced options.

Break Camps : Spring Break Camp – Session1

For Ages Kindergarten - 6th Grade

March 26, 2018-March 29, 2018 (Monday -Thursday @ 9:00am - 3:00pm) Balboa Park

Spring Break Camp is held in the Casa del Prado Building. Campers attend four classes each day: Voice, Acting, Dance/Movement, and Specialty. On the last afternoon of camp, there is an informal presentation for family and friends of the skills the campers have learned. Early Drop-Off and Extended Day: Early Drop-Off begins at 8:15am when Junior Theatre campers can be dropped off at the Casa del Prado building at no charge. Supervision is provided free until camp begins at 9:00 am. Extended Day is available from 3-5pm daily at $15.00 per day. Students will spend the afternoon with camp staff in supervised activities that include arts and crafts, games and movies. We will take sign-ups on a day-to-day basis every morning at check-in. Payment is due at sign-up, by cash or check.
