All Balboa Park Campus classes are held in the Casa del Prado Building. Class specifics are subject to change without notice.
Cancellations/Refunds: Cash refunds (less $25.00 service charge per child, per class or camp) are available up until seven days prior to the start of classes, after which time no refund is given. If Junior Theatre must cancel a class or camp due to insufficient enrollment, any tuition paid will be refunded in full. Note: Once a child has auditioned for a play in Balboa Park, there are no refunds or tuition credit granted. Workshop : Advanced Scene Study, One Acts

For Ages 7th - 12th

February 22, 2020-March 7, 2020 (Saurdays @ 10:00am - 12:00pm) Casa del Prado Building

This workshop is for serious acting students who want to explore some of scene study through one acts from recent playwrights. Students will devote time to a deeper connection and the rich use of language, layered characters, mature content and themes, resonance and imagery, and so much more!    

Technical : Set Design 101

For Ages 7th - 12th

March 14, 2020-March 21, 2020 (Saturdays @ 10:0am - 12:00am) Casa del Prado Building

Learn how to bring a story to life through creating the environment on stage. Students will learn design concepts and work together to brainstorm, research, sketch ideas, and create a scenic model for a play and present their final project. This workshop will will be very hands on.  Bring your designing mindset!  This is for all levels of designers; art skills are not required.

All Balboa Park Campus camps are held in the Casa del Prado Building. Camp specifics are subject to change without notice.

**Camp hours are from 9:00am to 3:00pm, Monday through Friday. Campers will have four classes each day: acting, voice, dance, and a theatre specialty topic. Campers will be split into teams based on the grade they are entering in the fall. It is not possible for campers to be placed on a team that is above their grade level. There are presentations for families on the last day of every camp session.

***Aftercare is available daily for $15 per day from 3-5pm. There is no pre-registration required.

Summer Camps : Acting Conservatory: “Crash Theatre” – A Unique Devised Theatre Laboratory

For Ages 9th - 12th

June 15, 2020-June 26, 2020 (Monday - Friday, 9:00am - 2:30pm) Balboa Park

Text+Music+Art=Theatre. The crashing together of disparate arts.   This calls on the students to crash together iconic or important literature with a musical artist or genre to create a wholly new devised theatre piece.  Students will combine text and music to create their own theatre piece in a class collaboration. Juxtapose an historical text with modern music. Add your unique point of view and create a one of a kind theatre experience.  Students will explore concepts of collaboration, devised theatre, viewpoints, and advanced theatre study to create a work that is authentic to their collective voice. Textual and musical source material to be determined.

Summer Camps : Musical Theatre Conservatory: Senior – Smokey Joe’s Cafe

For Ages 9th - 12th

  • This camp will be held at San Diego City College Black Box Theatre

A rocking revue of the Jukebox fun of the 1950’s and 1960’s, this musical brings together some of the most fun music to ever come out of the corner drugstore.  The songs of legendary hitmakers Mike Stoller and Jerry Leiber come to life in Smokey Joe's Cafe, the longest-running revue in Broadway History. This conservatory class will take an in depth look at the skills and techniques of the musical theatre performer and culminate in an open presentation of work.  This class is for students in grades 9-12 who are looking to dig deep for a challenge and to grow their skills by studying and performing hits such as “Hound Dog”, “Love Potion #9”, “On Broadway” and “Stand By Me”  

Summer Camps : Musical Theatre Conservatory – How to Eat Like a Child

For Ages 4th - 8th

  • This camp will be held at the Coronado Playhouse

This musical romp through the joys and sorrows of being a child includes hilarious lessons in such subjects as how to beg for a dog, how to torture your sister, and how to act after being sent to your room. The pace is fast, the tone subversive, and the recognition instant.  This conservatory class focuses on developing the skills and techniques of the musical theatre performer and will culminate in an open presentation of work.  This class is for students in grades 4 - 8 who are ready for a challenge!

Learn the basics of stagecraft as we prepare to mount a production here at Junior Theatre. Students will get opportunities to hang and focus lighting instruments, operate power tools, build and paint scenic elements, work in the costume loft, and more. This camp shows what it's like to work in an active theatre, and students can see their work onstage in JT's upcoming production of Jungle Book!

July 27, 2020-July 31, 2020 (Monday - Friday, 9:00am - 3:00pm) Casa del Prado Building

Shakespeare's toughest characters go head to head in this all out battle royal for the throne.  This acting intensive will focus on the skills and tools of the actor in bringing some of the most challenging Shakespeare scenes to life.  Students will focus on textual analysis, staging and the intentions of the character as they explore blood, revenge and murder most foul!

Summer Camps : Session 6: Acting Academy – Act Like you’ll Never Grow Up

For Ages 1st - 3rd

July 27, 2020-July 31, 2020 (Monday - Friday, 9:00am - 3:00pm) Casa del Prado Building

Think of a happy little thought and you’re off!!  This class gets our “lost children” moving and speaking as we explore scene work drawn from Peter Pan and the Neverland stories.  This acting class will have us telling stories and imagining our way through Neverland!

 I wanna be like you!  Swing into action as we act, sing and dance our what through the jungles.  Students will perform musical scene and selections from such shows as Tarzan, The Jungle Book and The Lion King in this musical theatre class.

Freckleface Strawberry and James and the Giant Peach will guide our storytellers through theatre games and exercises as they explore with their bookshelf friends. Bring the magic of theatre alive as we explore musicals like The Greatest Showman, Frozen, and Mary Poppins.  Our actors, singers and dancers will surprise and delight as we conjure up stories drawn from Matilda, and Harold and the Purple Crayon.  Camps feature a mix of our ToolBox classes, focusing on skills used by the artist, and Storyteller classes, which view the artist’s tools through the lens of a particular story.

A wild romp down 42nd street itself, this class will explore all the hottest tickets on Broadway today.  Students in this Musical Theatre Intensive will sing, dance and bring to life musical numbers from such shows as Dear Evan Hansen, Hadestown, Moulin Rouge and others!

Wacky and wild, our favorite animated friends come to life as we explore musicals like Spongebob Squrepants, The Addams family, Frozen, and Shrek.  Sing, dance and act through the worlds of You are a Good Man Charlie Brown, Mulan and Beauty and the Beast. Camps feature a mix of our ToolBox classes, focusing on skills used by the artist, and Storyteller classes, which view the artist’s tools through the lens of a particular story.

Cancellations/Refunds: Cash refunds (less $25.00 service charge per child, per class or camp) are available up until seven days prior to the start of classes, after which time no refund is given. Back by popular demand, “Mr. Justin” Lang will be leading an adventurous group of Junior Theatre actors to the 15th Annual San Diego Shakespeare Society Festival on Saturday April 18th in Balboa Park. JT campers will perform monologues, scenes, dances, and music alongside their peers and compete against other schools in San Diego County for top prizes and awards. This camp is for driven actors that want to feel the rush of performing outdoors and experience a festival unlike any other for young actors!

This workshop will meet March 28th, April 4th & 10th from 10am - 12pm. On festival day the class will be from 8am - 4pm.

Workshop : Stage Makeup Workshop

The stage make-up artist creates magic that helps the audience believe in a character. Students in this class will learn basics in stage make-up and learn to create characters using age, animal scar and other worldly designs. A basic make up kit is included in the cost of the class.

Workshop : Latin Dance Intensive

This class is designed to help students prepare for the upcoming auditions and production of West Side Story this spring, our instructor will take students on a deep dive into dance techniques drawn from Latin styles, including the mambo, cha-cha, sharp kicks, staccato and syncopated rhythms. Whether you are auditioning or not, students will enjoy this high energy workshop with Latin flair!

Young actors in this class will use their imagination to bring plays to life. A variety of source material will be used, from literature, to original ideas. Guided by the teaching artist, children will stage several plays over the course of the session, and present their favorite to a live audience on the last day of class.

Social media is here to stay and luckily so is theatre. This session Junior Theatre’s new acting class for teens will be connecting the two together.  Through the lens of relationship and social skills using their bodies, imaginations and powerful,  important voice students will use theatrical skills for enhancing their social media presence. In this class we will cultivate relationships, respect diverse viewpoints, communicate effectively, and understand the importance of real world connections while social networking. Working together using theatre games and exercises students will develop the most thought provoking and theatrical Tik Toks, will bring Instagram posts to life, and experience SnapChat diversity costume challenges. Students will be learning how to read their favorite songs and notes on a page. On the final day of class students will present a sight reading demonstration as well as musical numbers that feature every students creative energy. This NEW class will build sight reading skills for developing singers and will explore the rhythmic and melodic elements of music.

Find the emotional truth behind some of Broadway’s most memorable songs. Explore the drama and powerful vocal techniques of the protagonist coming to a major realization. This class will examine some of the most emotional numbers in Broadway history. We will look at what makes these pieces capture audiences, and how to perform this type of song in a sincere way that honors the truth of these moments, all the while practicing proper breathing, vocal tone, projection and resonance.

Jump into the zany world of Pinkalicious Pinkerton and her younger brother Peter!  Basic music skills meet with play production to create this fun class. Students will rehearse a mini version of Pinkalicious as they explore how the skills of the actor meet proper singing technique. Students will love working together to create a product for the last class.

Raise those little voices to the rafters with Broadway show tunes! Students will learn songs from musicals that feature children, as well as practicing proper singing technique. Some stage movement will be incorporated, as musical numbers are rehearsed for an informal performance on the last day of class.

This class will help each student access his or her own creativity through movement, story dramatization, theatre crafts and the use of costumes and props. A supportive, nurturing environment gives children the venue for developing social skills and a healthy release of emotion.
