All Balboa Park Campus classes are held in the Casa del Prado Building. Class specifics are subject to change without notice.
Cancellations/Refunds: Cash refunds (less $25.00 service charge per child, per class or camp) are available up until seven days prior to the start of classes, after which time no refund is given. If Junior Theatre must cancel a class or camp due to insufficient enrollment, any tuition paid will be refunded in full. Note: Once a child has auditioned for a play in Balboa Park, there are no refunds or tuition credit granted. Any discounts must be taken at the time of the order; no retroactive discounts or refunds/credits will be granted.

Workshop : Auditioning for Musical Theatre Workshop

For Ages 7th - 12th

September 21, 2019-September 28, 2019 (Saturdays @ 10 am - 12pm) Casa del Prado Building

:Learn tricks of the trade when auditioning for musicals at Junior Theatre and elsewhere. Students will practice a mock dance call, cold-reading sides, and preparing a 32-bar vocal selection, while discussing performance anxiety, stage presence and what it's like to sit on the directors' side of the table.

Workshop : Deep Dive into Dialects Workshop

For Ages 7th - 12th

October 5, 2019-October 12, 2019 (Saturdays@ 10:00am - 12:00pm) Casa del Prado Building

Learn the fundamentals of pronunciation in RP (standard British), Brooklyn and American Southern dialects. Practice reading scenes and monologues in a variety of accents, while maintaining the character-infused inflections and projection appropriate when speaking for the stage

Workshop : Rock Vocals for Musicals Workshop

For Ages 5th - 12th

November 16, 2019-November 23, 2019 (Saturdays@ 10:00am - 12:00pm) Casa del Prado Building

Learn how to sing in a rock-and-roll style that will help students prepare for Naked Mole Rat auditions coming up this winter. Also, review songs from a few other popular Broadway productions that include rock vocals, such as Hair, Rent, Spring Awakening, Grease and more.

Acting : Mini Play Jr.: You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown

For Ages 1st - 4rd

September 17, 2019-November 19, 2019 (Tuesdays @ 10am - 11:30am) Casa del Prado Building

This class is held on Tuesday mornings to accommodate home schooled families. Students will rehearse short scenes from "You're a Good Man Charlie Brown" while learning how to use the actor’s tools, story structures, blocking, expression and character development.

Acting : Mini Play: Harriet the Spy

For Ages 5th - 8th

September 17, 2019-November 19, 2019 (Tuesdays @ 10am - 11:30am) Casa del Prado Building

This class is held on Tuesday mornings to accommodate home schooled families. Students will rehearse short scenes from "Harriet the Spy" while learning how to use the actor’s tools, story structures, blocking, expression and character development.

Acting : Page to Stage: Harry Potter

For Ages 4th - 6th

September 17, 2019-November 19, 2019 (Tuesdays @4:30pm - 6pm) Casa del Prado Building

Working in groups to organically discover the various roles within a theatre production, students will create their own scenes and vignettes based on plots and themes from the Harry Potter series. Students will learn how to condense ideas, write simple scenes, and participate as director, actor and designer.

Acting : Twelfth Night or What You Are

For Ages 7th - 12th

September 17, 2019-November 19, 2019 (Tuesdays @ 4pm - 6pm) Casa del Prado Building

Leading up to the main stage production of William Shakespeare’s TWELFTH NIGHT, teaching artists Justin Lang and Sarah Siegel will lead students through theatre games, advanced acting exercises, social awareness activities, and the history and journey of the LGBTQ community. The class* culminates in an open share of monologues and scenes as well as a Q&A with the students and audience. Students will also have a chance to interface with representatives from some of San Diego’s foremost LGBTQ organizations such as The Center and San Diego Pride! Join us in connecting the richness of Shakespeare’s work to the current state of the world, and exploring valuable life skills, and how “The Human Condition” is at the heart of everyone’s story. *This class supports, but does not duplicate, the mainstage production of TWELFTH NIGHT, and is not a condensed version of the play.

For Ages 1st - 3rd

September 19, 2019-November 21, 2019 (Thursdays @ 4:30pm - 6pm) Casa del Prado Building

One of our most popular classes, because it breaks down acting techniques into practice with the voice, face and body. Students will begin to develop their own internal resources for acting, while having a great time in active acting exercises. A fast-paced and fun class.

Acting : Stories on Stage: Rainbow Fish

For Ages Pre Kindergarten - Kindergarten

September 21, 2019-November 23, 2019 (Saturdays@ 9:00am - 10:00am) Casa del Prado Building

Young actors, join us as we create scenes, speaking and movement based on Rainbow Fish, a children’s literature favorite. This class provides the basis for acting study while covering themes from the book including friendship, happiness and sharing.

Acting : Mini Play: 101 Dalmatians

For Ages 1st - 3rd

September 21, 2019-November 23, 2019 (Saturdays@ 10:00am - 11:00pm) Casa del Prado Building

Using the adventures of 101 Dalmatians as a basis for theatrical creation, this class will get wild and wacky with character, storytelling, costumes and props. The development of short theatre pieces will challenge creative students who love to act. Students in this class will participate as producer, actor, director and designer.

Acting : Mini Play: Into the Woods Jr.

For Ages 4th - 6th

September 21, 2019-November 23, 2019 (Saturdays@ 11:00am - 12:30pm) Casa del Prado Building

Using the adventures of Into the Woods as a basis for theatrical creation, this class will get wild and wacky with character, storytelling, costumes and props. Acting : Mastering Technique

For Ages 7th - 12th

September 22, 2019-November 24, 2019 (Sundays @ 9:00am - 10:30am) Casa del Prado Building

Throughout theatre history, renowned artists such as Anton Chekhov, Sanford Meisner, and Anne Bogart have developed acting technique to access character and story in an organic and authentic way.  This class will allow students to explore several techniques and develop their sensibilities as actors.  A final presentation will take place at the end of the session.

Acting : Stage Basics & Main Stage Prep

For Ages 1st - 3rd

September 22, 2019-November 24, 2019 (Sundays@ 10:30am - 11:30am) Casa del Prado Building

 This class is a great opportunity to focus on the nuts and bolts of acting. Students will learn theatre terminology, stage directions, how to take down blocking, techniques for entrances and exits and other skills that combine the creative with the technical. Students will work on all these skills while putting together short scenes. This class is a wonderful preparation for being on Junior Theatre’s mainstage.

Singing : Broadway Now

For Ages 1st - 3rd

September 16, 2019-November 18, 2019 (Mondays @ 4:30pm - 5:30pm) Casa del Prado Building

Learn the foundations of vocal technique including breath support, tone, pitch and expression while singing songs from productions currently playing on Broadway, including Aladdin, Lion King, Frozen, Harry Potter and more favorites.

Singing : Songs of Andrew Lloyd Weber

For Ages 7th-12th

September 21, 2019-November 23, 2019 (Saturdays@ 10:00am - 12:00pm) Casa del Prado Building

Learn the foundations of vocal technique including breath support, tone, pitch and expression while rehearsing songs and scenes from some of Andrew Lloyd Weber’s best known productions. Will include selections from Phantom of the Opera, Cats, Evita, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and more.

Learn the foundations of vocal technique including breath support, tone, pitch and expression while creating songs and scenes from the wildly popular movie musical, “The Greatest Showman.”

Learn the foundations of vocal technique including breath support, tone, pitch and expression while rehearsing songs and scenes from some of Leonard Bernstein’s best known productions. Will include selections from West Side Story, On the Town, Peter Pan, Wonderful Town and more.

Dance : Song & Dance Jam

For Ages Pre Kindergarten - Kindergarten

September 19, 2019-November 21, 2019 (Thursdays @ 3:30pm - 4:30pm) Casa del Prado Building

Indulge your young child’s natural inclinations to move and sing as a way to tell stories and explore creativity. This class uses rhythm, lyrics, tempo, size, shape, level and feeling to improvise short scenes or recreate numbers from popular young children’s productions.

Dance : Dance Theatre: Charlie & the Chocolate Factory

For Ages 4th - 6th

September 21, 2019-November 23, 2019 (Saturdays@ 9:00am - 10:30am) Casa del Prado Building

Students will explore a variety of dance genres and techniques through songs and scenes from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Each class meeting promises a new adventure exploring the magical and mysterious candy factory while learning new choreography and creating character development through physicality.

Dance : Dance Me a Story

For Ages Pre Kindergarten - Kindergarten

September 21, 2019-November 23, 2019 (Saturdays @ 10:30am - 11:30am) Casa del Prado Building

A great class for kinesthetic learners! Children will experience story dramatization, told through dance! Very improvisational, and designed to increase imagination, this class will present stories that will then be “choreographed” by the young dancers. A great opportunity to explore movement related to action and feeling.

Dance : Tap & Jazz for Theatre

For Ages 1st - 3rd

September 21, 2019-November 23, 2019 (Saturdays @ 11:30am - 12:30am) Casa del Prado Building

Basic skills in tap and jazz will increase coordination, self-esteem and overall fitness, and are used heavily in musical theatre productions. Students must have both tap shoes and soft-soled shoes for class. Students will warm up and then learn steps and combinations in both styles of dance.

Dance : Dance Theatre: Newsies

For Ages 4th - 6th

September 22, 2019-November 24, 2019 (Sundays @ 9:00am - 10:30am) Casa del Prado Building

Stop the presses, it’s time to seize the day! Students will explore a variety of dance genres and techniques through choreography and scenes from Newsies. This Tony-winning show is chalk full of high energy ensemble numbers that will challenge students’ athleticism with turns, splits, cartwheels and more, all while learning how to dance in character and convey the strong emotions of this inspiring story.

Dance : Tappin Down Broadway

For Ages 7th - 12th

September 22, 2019-November 24, 2019 (Sundays@ 10:30am - 12:30pm) Casa del Prado Building

Designed for our more experienced dancers, this class develops dance technique while creating new choreography based on dance numbers from some of Broadway’s classic tap-heavy and jazz-heavy shows, including 42nd Street, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Aladdin, and more.

Dance : Story Dance: Alice & Wonderland

For Ages Pre Kindergarten - Kindergarten

September 22, 2019-November 24, 2019 (Sundays@ 12:30am - 1:30pm) Casa del Prado Building

In this class, students will have the chance to explore creative dance movements through scenes and music from Alice in Wonderland. Portray characters including Alice, the Cheshire Cat, the Queen of hearts and others while learning basic dance steps, coordination and flexibility.

Specialty/Acting : Improv Troupe

For Ages 4th - 6th

September 18, 2019-November 20, 2019 (Wednesday @ 4:30pm - 6pm) Casa del Prado Building

Students will discover the basic vocabulary and techniques behind the art of improv through scenes, games and exercises in a fun, supportive environment.  Students will learn the value of team work as they become a more playful, spontaneous and flexible actor. On the last day of class students will perform in an improv showcase for family and friends.

Fall Camps 2019

Balboa Park

November 25, 2019 - November 27, 2019

All Balboa Park Campus camps are held in the Casa del Prado Building. Camp specifics are subject to change without notice.

**Camp hours are from 9:00am to 3:00pm, Monday through Friday. Campers will have four classes each day: acting, voice, dance, and a theatre specialty topic. Campers will be split into teams based on the grade they are entering in the fall. It is not possible for campers to be placed on a team that is above their grade level. There are presentations for families on the last day of every camp session.

***Aftercare is available daily for $15 per day from 3-5pm. There is no pre-registration required.
