Summer Camp 2019

Balboa Park

June 10, 2019 - August 23, 2019

All Balboa Park Campus camps are held in the Casa del Prado Building. Camp specifics are subject to change without notice.

**Camp hours are from 9:00am to 3:00pm, Monday through Friday. Campers will have four classes each day: acting, voice, dance, and a theatre specialty topic. Campers will be split into teams based on the grade they are entering in the fall. It is not possible for campers to be placed on a team that is above their grade level. There are presentations for families on the last day of every camp session.

***Aftercare is available daily for $15 per day from 3-5pm. There is no pre-registration required.

Cancellations/Refunds: Cash refunds (less $25.00 service charge per child, per class or camp) are available up until seven days prior to the start of class or camp, after which time no refund is given. If Junior Theatre must cancel a class or camp due to insufficient enrollment, any tuition paid will be refunded in full. Note: Once a child has auditioned for a play in Balboa Park, there are no refunds or tuition credit granted. Any discounts must be taken at the time of the order; no retroactive discounts or refunds/credits will be granted.

We offer multi-class and sibling discounts. Call (619) 239-1311 for more information. Please note, no discounts can be taken online.

All Balboa Park Campus classes are held in the Casa del Prado Building. Class/Camp specifics are subject to change without notice. Registration is accepted through the first week of the session. However, we are strict about class size and age limits. Students must be at least 3 years old to participate in Pre-K classes, and must be toilet trained.

Cancellations/Refunds: Cash refunds (less $25.00 service charge per child, per class or camp) are available up until seven days prior to the start of class or camp, after which time no refund is given. If Junior Theatre must cancel a class or camp due to insufficient enrollment, any tuition paid will be refunded in full. Note: Once a child has auditioned for a play in Balboa Park, there are no refunds or tuition credit granted. Singing : Song & Scene

For Ages 1st - 3rd

April 10, 2019-June 12, 2019 (Wednesdays @ 4:30pm - 5:30pm) Balboa Park

This class will put musical theatre songs in context for young singers who want to learn proper singing technique along with acting skills. Students will learn songs from a variety of shows, and work on the scenes that lead into the song, stressing the emotion, subtext and character development that makes the music come alive.

Singing : Cabaret Style Theatre

For Ages 7th - 12th

April 13, 2019-June 15, 2019 (Saturdays@ 10:00am - 12:00pm) Balboa Park

This class for teens explores the style of performance know as Cabaret theatre, which involves arranging songs to fit the individual performer, and incorporating personal stories that add to overall performance elements.

Singing : Songs of Sondheim

For Ages 4th - 6th

April 14, 2019-June 16, 2019 (Sundays@ 10:30am - 11:30am) Balboa Park

Explore your voice through songs from the Stephen Sondheim, while learning about character types, song structures, and traditional performance techniques of the voice (and a little dance).

Acting : Stories on Stage – The Giving Tree

Young actors, join us as we create scenes, speaking and movement based on Shel Silverstein’s children’s literature classic. This class provides the basis for acting study while covering themes from the book including friendship, kindness and working together.

Acting : Fairytale Players

For Ages 1st - 3rd

April 8, 2019-June 10, 2019 (Mondays @ 4:30pm - 6:00pm) Balboa Park

Who doesn’t love a good fairytale? Young actors in this class will portray royal, magical, provincial and animal characters found in fairytales. A combination of popular fairytales from around the world will be featured. Children will build skills in speech and language, movement and characterization.

Acting : Physical Skills for Acting

For Ages 4th - 6th

April 9, 2019-June 11, 2019 (Tuesdays @ 4:30pm - 6:00pm) Balboa Park

This class is perfect for the active, movement oriented student who wants to learn how to use their body and the theatre space to tell stories. We will cover stage combat, tableau, and mime, plus students will practice traveling, jumping and landing, and learn how blocking frames the scene.

Acting : That’s Show Biz!

For Ages 7th - 12th

April 9, 2019-June 11, 2019 (Tuesdays @ 4:00pm - 6:00pm) Balboa Park

Calling all producers, directors, designers and actors, you are needed to start a brand new theatre company! Students will be in charge of every aspect of bringing a piece from conception to opening night. Each student in this class will have a role both onstage and backstage learning what it takes to form a theatre. Costume design, advertising, directing, set design, and acting are some of the roles they will have the opportunity to fill. This class focuses on artistic collaboration and production.

Acting : Following Your Instincts

For Ages 4th - 6th

April 11, 2019-June 13, 2019 (Thursdays @ 4:30PM - 6:00PM) Balboa Park

Acting is reacting, so find out what it means to be fully in the moment as an actor.  Students will explore scenes, improvisation, and acting exercises that will refine their performance technique.  There will be a showcase at the end of the session featuring the students’ work.

Acting : Stories on Stage – Where the Wild Things Are

Young actors, join us as we walk through a magical forest filled with mischief and adventure! This class will bring the “wild things” to life, creating scenes from a story where dreams and imagination blur together

Acting : Mini Play – A Bug’s Life

For Ages 1st - 3rd

April 13, 2019-June 15, 2019 (Saturdays@ 10:00am - 11:00pm) Balboa Park

Using the adventures of A Bug’s Life as a basis for theatrical creation, this class will get wild and wacky with character, storytelling, costumes and props. The development of short theatre pieces will challenge creative students who love to act. Students in this class will participate as producer, actor, director and designer.

Acting : Mini Play – The Chronicles of Narnia

For Ages 4th - 6th

April 13, 2019-June 15, 2019 (Saturdays @ 11:00am - 12:30pm) Balboa Park

Four siblings play a game of hide and seek and wind up entering a magical land inhabited by beasts, dwarfs, and giants all ruled by an evil witch. Students will enjoy creating characters and scenes from this children’s literature classic while they participate as producer, actor, director and designer.

Acting : Mastering Auditions

For Ages 7th-12th

April 14, 2019-June 16, 2019 (Sundays @ 9:00am - 10:30am) Balboa Park

This class is dedicated to the preparation of audition material for the individual actor, and also includes work in cold readings and movement auditions. Attention will be given to selection of material, individual coaching and polish of finished pieces. Course will culminate with a practice audition.

Acting : Play in a Day

For Ages 1st - 3rd

April 14, 2019-June 16, 2019 (Sundays@ 10:30am - 11:30am) Balboa Park

The race is on! Students in this class will create a brand new play every class session. This is a fast-paced chance to learn about the theatrical elements of plot, costume, setting, props and music while having fun acting. Learning ten new plays in ten weeks will stimulate creativity, enhance memory skills and create lasting friendships.

Workshop : Shakespeare Scenes & Festival

For Ages 7th - 12th

April 6, 2019-April 27, 2019 (Saturdays 9:00am - 12:00pm) Balboa Park

Acclaimed JT Instructor, “Mr. Justin” Lang, will be leading an adventurous group of Junior Theatre actors to the 14th Annual San Diego Shakespeare Society Festival on Saturday April 27th in Balboa Park. JT campers will perform monologues, scenes, dances, and music alongside their peers and compete against other schools in San Diego County for top prizes and awards. This camp is for driven actors that want to feel the rush of performing outdoors and experience a festival unlike any other for young actors!

Workshop : Commedia Workshop

For Ages 4th - 12th

June 1, 2019-June 8, 2019 (Saturdays @ 10:00am - 12:00pm) Balboa Park

This class explores the mother of all comedy, commedia dell arte! Students will learn mask work, comedy skills, improv, characters and much more. This class combines all the fun of slapstick comedy, melodrama, and collaboration rolled into one!

Workshop : Directing 101

For Ages 7th - 12th

May 18, 2019-May 25, 2019 (Saturdays@ 10:00am - 12:00pm) Balboa Park

“But what I really want to do is direct.” Students with an interest in directing will enjoy this step-by-step approach to selecting and examining a script, auditioning and then working with actors, and leading a production team to opening night. Analysis combined with hands-on work will give students some valuable experience in directing.

Dance : Magic Movers

For Ages Pre Kindergarten - Kindergarten

April 14, 2019-June 16, 2019 (Sundays @ 12:00pm - 1:00pm) Balboa Park

A movement class for young children that provides the basis for dance instruction. Creative movement activities will explore the magic of dance through shape, color, tempo, level, and rhythm. Dance along with songs and sounds from magical scenes, fairy tales, and superheroes!

Dance : Dancing with Lin Manuel Miranda

For Ages 7th - 12th

April 14, 2019-June 16, 2019 (Sundays@ 10:30am - 12:00pm) Balboa Park

Dance to music created by Broadway’s hottest composer! Experienced dancers will enjoy developing dance technique from a variety of styles while featuring choreography from Mr. Miranda’s biggest hits, including In the Heights, Bring it On, Hamilton, Frozen, and more.

Dance : Kids Pop Hits

For Ages 1st - 3rd

April 13, 2019-June 15, 2019 (Saturdays @ 11:30am - 12:30pm) Balboa Park

Crank up the volume! Students will explore creative dance movements through recent pop music hits! Students will learn the foundations of dance technique and working as an ensemble while they enjoy fun choreography from family-friendly pop music.

Dance : Dance Theatre – Mary Poppins

For Ages 4th - 6th

April 14, 2019-June 16, 2019 (Sundays @ 9:00am - 10:30am) Balboa Park

Students will explore creative dance movements through songs and scenes from Mary Poppins. Each class meeting promises a new adventure while students revisit the rooftops of London and the English countryside! Students learn new choreography and focus on character development.

Dance : Kids in Motion

For Ages Pre Kindergarten - Kindergarten

April 13, 2019-June 15, 2019 (Saturdays @ 10:30am - 11:30am) Balboa Park

A movement class for young children that provides the basis for dance instruction. Creative movement activities that explore shape, color, tempo, level, dynamics and rhythm will engage the mind and body. Basic dance steps will be taught as children move across the floor, increasing their flexibility and stamina.

Dance : Intro to Tap & Jazz

For Ages 4th - 6th

April 13, 2019-June 16, 2019 (Saturdays @ 9:00am - 10:30am) Balboa Park

Basic skills in tap and jazz will increase coordination, self-esteem and overall fitness. Students must have both tap shoes and soft-soled shoes for class. Students will warm-up their bodies each class, and then learn steps and combinations in both styles of dance.
