San Diego Junior Theatre's classes and camps help young people build self-confidence, learn theatre techniques, collaborate and connect with others, and grow as critical and creative thinkers - all from the comfort and convenience of a computer or tablet. ***Registration for camps & classes is a 2 part process. When you register you will be forwarded to the payment page. Please complete the payment page with your information. VIRTUAL SPRING CLASSES 2021

April 12, 2021 - June 20, 2021

Virtual Spring Classes and in person Workshops are now Enrolling at San Diego Junior Theatre: Don’t let quarantine prevent you from introducing your child to the magic of theatre this school year. Classes include singing, acting, dancing and other specialties are offered via the Zoom platform. Each class will offer innovative ways for young people to create, interact, and collaborate from your computer or tablet. There’s something for every age range and level of ability.

Class specifics are subject to change without notice.

Cancellations/Refunds: Cash refunds (less $25.00 service charge per child, per class or camp) are available up until seven days prior to the start of class or camp, after which time no refund is given. If Junior Theatre must cancel a class or camp due to insufficient enrollment, any tuition paid will be refunded in full. Any discounts must be taken at the time of the order; no retroactive discounts or refunds/credits will be granted.

We offer multi-class and sibling discounts. Email registration@juniortheatre.com for more information. Please note, no discounts can be taken online.

Dance : Disney Dance Party

For Grades Pre K - Kindergarten

April 12, 2021-June 14, 2021 (Mondays @ 9:30am - 10:30am) Virtual

Explore the music of Disney together, as a Junior Theatre Teaching Artist guides you and your budding artist through a journey of song, imaginative movement, and pretend. A movement class for young children that provides the basis for dance instruction. Creative movement activities that explore shape, color, tempo, level, dynamics and rhythm will engage the mind and body. Basic dance steps will be taught as children move across the floor, increasing their flexibility and stamina.

Acting/Dance : Zoo Hullabaloo! – 1

For Grades Pre K - Kindergarten

April 13, 2021-May 11, 2021 (Tuesdays @ 9:30am - 10:30am) Virtual

Little actors will love bringing animal characters to life on the stage and learning about theatre from inside the zoo. Children in this class will enjoy learning basic acting and storytelling techniques, while enhancing social skills and making friends. Popular literature that feature animals will take center stage in this dynamic class. You child will practice creative movement, expressive vocal work, and theatrical imagination to help develop language, empathy, and social development.

Little actors will love bringing animal characters to life on the stage and learning about theatre from inside the zoo. Your child will practice creative movement, expressive vocal work, and theatrical imagination to help develop language, empathy, and social development. A great class to begin a child’s Junior Theatre study!

Yoga : Animal Yoga

For Grades Pre K - Kindergarten

April 17, 2021-June 19, 2021 (Saturdays @ 10:00am - 11:00am) Virtual

Bend, breathe, and stretch your way through the animal kingdom! Each young artist will get in touch with their physical instruments through animal poses while also learning about breath, mindfulness, and facts about wildlife. This kid-friendly yoga class is perfectly suited for students at every level, introducing basic concepts of Hatha yoga.

Singing : The Magic Kingdom Singalong

For Grades 1st - 3rd

May 17, 2021-June 14, 2021 (Mondays @ 3:00pm - 4:00pm) Virtual

Join Elsa, Moana, Ariel, and other musical heroes and heroines as students learn and sing songs from Disney’s stage and screen. These young artists will learn the connection of voice and breath, pitch and dynamics, and emotional expression through singing songs and learning lyrics. Young performers will also learn the cultural background of the musicals that are covered as well as the characters of these stories.

Acting : Don’t Let the Pigeon Act on Stage

For Grades 1st - 3rd

April 14, 2021-June 16, 2021 (Wednesdays @ 3:00pm - 4:00pm) Virtual

Would you let the pigeon act in a play? How about letting him sing some songs? Would you let a naked mole rat get dressed? Or become friends with Elephant and Piggy? Through the stories of Mo Willems, this class will explore the ABC’s of acting, self-expression, imagination, and music. Your child will engage in visuals, sounds and tactile exercises that develop language, dexterity, and social development through music and theatre-centered games.

Dance : Space Jam!

For Grades 1st - 3rd

April 18, 2021-June 20, 2021 (Saturdays @ 10:00am - 11:00am) Virtual

An out-of-this-world dance party featuring songs from outer space! Young artists will learn dance vocabulary, eye-hand coordination, and creative expression through movement, music, and imagination. This “playlist” will include songs from musical theatre, film and TV, and pop culture.

Singing : From Hair to Hamilton: A Musical Revolution

For Grades 4th - 6th

April 12, 2021-June 14, 2021 (Mondays @ 4:30pm - 5:30pm) Virtual

 Learn how musical theatre interprets American History. Through learning songs from current stage hits like Hamilton and Hairspray to pop culture phenomena like Hair and The Wiz, students will explore vocal storytelling using voice and musical expression. This class will focus on both proper vocal technique and introductory music sight-reading as well as cover the social and historical environments in which these shows were created.

Acting : Star Wars Shakespeare!

For Grades 4th - 6th

April 15, 2021-June 17, 2021 (Thursdays @ 3:00pm - 4:00pm) Virtual

This class combines classic plots by the Bard with modern thoughts by Jedis! These young artists will learn about Shakespeare’s verse by exploring creativity, self-expression, and story dramatization through the lens of Star Wars. Act out the similarities between Hamlet and Luke Skywalker. How are Rey and Viola alike? Richard III as a Sith Lord! The galaxy’s the limit and may the verse be with you!

Acting : “Yes And…” A Character Improv Class

For Grades 4th - 6th

April 24, 2021-June 19, 2021 (Saturdays @ 10:00am - 11:00am) Virtual

 I’m a Chef! I’m an Astronaut! I’m a Firefighter! Create stories at the speed of imagination. Students will explore storytelling through character focused improvisations and theatre exercises as they engage their body, voice and imagination. Students will explore improvisation through theatre games and exercises in a fun and supportive environment.  This class focuses on the value of teamwork as it develops a more playful, spontaneous and flexible actor. Students will be encouraged to find everyday items from around their house they can use as costumes for exercises. Almost anything will work as a costume piece- Hats, Glasses, Magic Wands…

Acting : Zoom Lens: Making your own Movie

For Grades 4th - 6th

April 18, 2021-June 20, 2021 (Saturdays @ 10:00am - 11:00am) Virtual

"Lights, camera, action" but from the comfort of home! In this course, each student will gain a fundamental understanding of digital filmmaking, including script writing, video capture, and video editing. Your child's creativity will thrive as we also learn how digital media is used on screen and on stage today. No special equipment needed; you can create art from any device!

Acting : Quaran-Teen the Production

For Grades 7th - 12th

April 13, 2021-June 15, 2021 (Tuesdays @ 4:00pm - 5:30pm) Virtual

Actors in this class will have the opportunity to audition for, rehearse and perform a one-act play.  Throughout the rehearsal process, students will develop small screen acting skills, create fun characters and have a blast getting creative making costumes and props.  If they thought making a Tik Tok video was fun wait until they produce an entire play! On the last day of class, students will perform their one-act play for a live Zoom audience.

Singing : You will be Found: Exploring the music of Pasek & Paul

For Grades 7th - 12th

April 17, 2021-June 19, 2021 (Saturdays @ 10:00am - 11:30am) Virtual

Study and sing the music of Ben Pasek and Justin Paul: the creators of Dear Evan Hansen and The Greatest Showman. But did you know that Pasek and Paul also wrote new music for Disney’s live-action Aladdin and a new score to James and the Giant Peach? In this class, students will learn the connection of voice and breath, pitch and dynamics, and emotional expression through singing songs and learning lyrics of these two Broadway powerhouses as well as analyzing the context of the shows they helped to create.

Acting : Shakespeare Fest

For Grades 7th - 12th

March 13, 2021-April 24, 2021 (Sundays @ 10:00am - 12:00pm) Virtual

This Class will meet - March 13, 14, 20, 21, 27, 28 & April 3, 4th from 10am - 12pm.   Acclaimed JT Instructor, “Mr. Justin” Lang, will be leading an adventurous group of Junior Theatre actors to the annual San Diego Shakespeare Society Festival streaming on Saturday April 24th online. JT actors will perform their selection of monologues, and/or scenes alongside their peers and compete against other schools in San Diego County for top prizes and awards. This workshop is for driven actors that want to feel the rush of performing outdoors and experience a festival unlike any other for young actors!

Workshop : HashtagStageSkillz

For Grades 7th - 12th

April 29, 2021-May 13, 2021 (Thursdays @ 4pm - 6pm) Balboa Park

This workshop is live and in person. The class will meet for three Thursdays.   Social media is here to stay and luckily so is theatre and this workshop for teens will be connecting the two together. Tik Tok, Snap Chat, and Instagram will be our stage!  Together we will cultivate relationships, explore diverse viewpoints, use our theatre skills to bring posts to life, and understand the importance of real-world connections while social networking.  Students will develop the most thought-provoking and theatrical Tik Toks, will stage Instagram posts, and use Snap Chat filters for so much more than just a cute cat face. Make sure your phone is charged!

Workshop : Hip Hop & Hula Get Down

For Grades 4th -12th

April 18, 2021-May 2, 2021 (Sundays @ 12pm - 1pm) Balboa Park

This workshop is live and in person. The class meets for 3 Sundays. Whether you are a new or seasoned dancer/performer or just a fan of shows like America’s Got Talent, America’s Best Dance Crew, or So You Think You Can Dance, this class is for you! The Hip-Hop & Hula Get Down is a workshop that fuses contemporary Hip-Hop and Hawaiian cultural Dance. Participants will learn and explore dance skills through exercises and crafted choreography that incorporates both forms of dance and shares the deep cultural significance of Hula and Hip-Hop.

Acting : “Black Voices on Stage (you don’t have to be Black to take this class)”

For Grades 7th - 12th

April 15, 2021-June 17, 2021 (Thursdays @ 5pm - 6:30pm) Virtual

The experiences throughout the Black diaspora vary wildly. If the path to racial understanding travels through empathy, theatre is a major city en route! During this 10-week workshop students will gain perspective on the Black experience  by reading, performing, examining and discussing a different play by a Black author  each week. Participants will delve into theme, character development, social relevance  and personal connections sparked by these plays. (Kimberly King, Desha Crownover)   *Class is recommended for students 14+ *Mature and sensitive subject matter

**K-6 Spring Virtual Camp hours will be 9am – 2pm with a 1 hour lunch break from 11am – 12pm. Campers will have four classes each day: acting, voice, dance, and a theatre specialty topic. Campers will be split into teams with other campers in their similar grade levels

**Creative Play camp hours will be 9am – 11am. with a short 15 minute break.

Let your imagination take flight into the world of theatre through singing, dancing and acting! This camp will introduce our youngest students (ages 3-6) to the tools of the actor by exploring movement, the connection to voice and breath, and building creativity through games and activities.
