Virtual 2020 Summer Camps

Registration for Virtual Summer Camps Session will be open Monday, May 4, 2020.

Virtual Summer Camps Now Enrolling at San Diego Junior Theatre: Don’t let quarantine prevent you from introducing your child to the magic of theatre this summer. Summer camps including singing, acting, dancing and other specialties are now offered via the Zoom platform. Each camp will offer innovative ways for young people to create, interact, and collaborate from your computer or tablet. There’s something for every age range and level of ability.

Camp specifics are subject to change without notice.

**Virtual Camp hours vary depending on your child's grade level and will be held Monday through Friday. Campers will have four classes each day: acting, voice, dance, and a theatre specialty topic. Campers will be split into teams based on the grade they are entering in the fall. It is not possible for campers to be placed on a team that is above their grade level.

Cancellations/Refunds: Cash refunds (less $25.00 service charge per child, per class or camp) are available up until seven days prior to the start of class or camp, after which time no refund is given. If Junior Theatre must cancel a class or camp due to insufficient enrollment, any tuition paid will be refunded in full. Any discounts must be taken at the time of the order; no retroactive discounts or refunds/credits will be granted.

Acting : Acting Conservatory -“Crash Theatre” – A Unique Devised Theatre Laboratory

For Grades 7th - 12th

June 15, 2020-June 26, 2020 (Monday - Friday, 9:00am - 12:00pm) Virtual

A devised theatre experience.  Text+Music+Art=Theatre. The crashing together of disparate arts.   This calls on the students to crash together iconic or important literature with a musical artist or genre to create a wholly new devised theatre piece.  Students will combine text and music to create their own theatre piece in a class collaboration. Juxtapose an historical text with modern music. Add your unique point of view and create a one of a kind theatre experience.  Students will explore concepts of collaboration, devised theatre, viewpoints, and advanced theatre study to create a work that is authentic to their collective voice.  Textual and musical source material to be determined.

Musical Theatre : Musical Theatre Conservatory Senior – “On Broadway” with Lieber and Stoller

For Grades 9th - 12th

July 6, 2020-July 17, 2020 (Monday - Friday 9:00am - 12:00pm) Virtual

Celebrated by Broadway audiences with “Smokey Joe’s Café,” this conservatory will explore the larger scope of Lieber and Stoller’s blockbuster hits of the 1950’s and 60’s. Songs made famous by Elvis Presley, The Drifters, The Coasters, and many others. Material will be chosen to fit the talents of the student ensemble.

Musical Theatre : Musical Theatre Conservatory – How I Became a Pirate

For Grades 4th - 8th

July 20, 2020-July 31, 2020 (Monday - Friday, 9:00am - 12:00pm) Virtual

Songs, dances, and scenes from “How I Became a Pirate,” will serve as the material for this virtual swashbuckling Zoomical adventure. Pirate Captain Braid Beard and his mates enlist the help of young Jeremy Jacob as they look for the perfect spot to bury their treasure.  

Camps : Creative Play Camp – Session 1

For Ages 3 - 6 years old

Let your imagination take flight into the world of theatre through singing, dancing and acting! This camp will introduce our youngest students (ages 3-6) and their parents to the tools of the actor by exploring movement, the connection to voice and breath, and building creativity through games and activities.

 Oh, the places we’ll go!!  Come play with characters like the Lorax, the Sneetches, and Horton’s Whos as we bring the terrifically fun world of Dr. Seuss to life.  This musical theatre class will call on our students’ imaginations, voices and bodies as we explore scenes and songs from “The Doctor” himself!

This week turns it up to eleven with this Rock n’ Roll theme. Students will sing, dance, act and rock through musicals like School of Rock, In the Heights, Billy Elliott and High School Musical.  Camps will feature a mix of our ToolBox classes, which focus on skills used by the artists and Storyteller classes which view the tools of the artist through the lens of a particular story.

 Shakespeare's toughest characters go head to head in this all out battle royal for the throne.  This acting intensive will focus on the skills and tools of the actor in bringing some of the most challenging Shakespeare scenes to life.  Students will focus on textual analysis, staging and the intentions of the character as they explore blood, revenge and murder most foul!

A wild romp down 42nd street itself, this class will explore all the hottest tickets on Broadway today.  Students in this Musical Theatre Intensive will sing, dance and bring to life musical numbers from such shows as Dear Evan Hansen, Hadestown, Moulin Rouge and others!
