Balboa Park

January 14, 2019 - March 24, 2019

All Balboa Park Campus classes are held in the Casa del Prado Building. Class/Camp specifics are subject to change without notice. Registration is accepted through the first week of the session. However, we are strict about class size and age limits. Students must be at least 3 years old to participate in Pre-K classes, and must be toilet trained.

Cancellations/Refunds: Cash refunds (less $25.00 service charge per child, per class or camp) are available up until seven days prior to the start of class or camp, after which time no refund is given. If Junior Theatre must cancel a class or camp due to insufficient enrollment, any tuition paid will be refunded in full. Note: Once a child has auditioned for a play in Balboa Park, there are no refunds or tuition credit granted. Any discounts must be taken at the time of the order; no retroactive discounts or refunds/credits will be granted.

We offer multi-class and sibling discounts. Call (619) 239-1311 for more information. Please note, no discounts can be taken online.

Acting : Stories on Stage – Wizard of Oz

The Wizard of Oz: Young actors and dancers, join Dorothy, The Cowardly Lion, Tin Man and Scarecrow’s wild adventures into the Land of Oz! This class brings characters to life through speech and movement while incorporating basic foundations of dance.

Acting : Improv Troupe

For Ages 1st - 5th

January 15, 2019-March 19, 2019 (Tuesdays @ 4:30pm - 6:00pm) Casa del Prado Building

Students will discover the basic vocabulary and techniques behind the art of improv through scenes, games and exercises in a fun, supportive environment.  Students will learn the value of team work as they become a more playful, spontaneous and flexible actor. On the last day of class students will perform in an improv showcase for family and friends.

Acting : Acting Naturally

For Ages 7th - 12th

January 15, 2019-March 19, 2019 (Tuesdays @ 4:00pm - 6:00pm) Casa del Prado Building

Directors look for actors who are comfortable and confident on stage. In this acting class we will explore the essential skills to naturally move their bodies on stage, how to easily find the emotion of a character, how to control their voices and develop the powerful tool of listening and reacting. We will discover how effortless acting can be while learning the secrets that the best actors out there know.

A class designed to introduce clown, pantomime and commedia styles related to the upcoming production of Suessical. Students will learn to use physical comedy and exaggeration to tell stories and create characters.

Young actors, join us as we walk through the woods and meet the world’s best-loved monster! The Gruffalo class brings animal characters to life and celebrates a very brave and clever mouse.

Acting : Mini Play – Lion King

1st-3rd graders will re-create selections from the ever-popular Lion King while learning how to use the actor’s tools, story structures and teamwork to present selected scenes.

Acting : Mini Play – Pippi Longstocking

Pippi Longstocking: Students will get a taste of the JT production season by using themes from Pippi Longstocking of as a basis for developing character, storytelling, costumes and props. Creating short theatre pieces will challenge students through speech, dramatic movement, and communicating emotion and subtext.4

Acting : Advanced Acting Techniques for Teens

For Ages 7th-12th

Throughout theatre history, renowned artists such as Anton Chekhov, Sanford Meisner, and Anne Bogart have developed acting technique to access character and story in an organic and authentic way.  This class will allow students to explore several techniques and develop their sensibilities as actors.

Acting : Mini Play – Alice in Wonderland

For Ages 4th - 6th

January 20, 2019-March 24, 2019 (Sundays@ 10:30am -12:00pm) Casa del Prado Building

Using the adventures of Alice in Wonderland of as a basis for theatrical creation, this class will get wild and wacky with character, storytelling, costumes and props. The development of short theatre pieces will challenge creative students who love to act. Students in this class will participate as producer, actor, director and designer.

Dance : Dance Theatre – Broadway Revue

For Ages 1st - 5th

January 14, 2019-March 18, 2019 (Mondays@ 4:30pm - 6pm) Casa del Prado Building

Students will dabble in tap, jazz, contemporary and hip hop styles in this mixed-age class where older and younger students will learn from each other. Choreography is based on recent popular Broadway productions of Hamilton, An American in Paris, Kinky Boots and more.

Peace, Love, and Rock ‘n Roll rule in this class featuring choreography from Hair, Little Shop of Horrors and Hairspray. Students will recreate original choreography and is best suited for experienced dancers.

Singing : Singing in Harmony

January 16, 2019-March 20, 2019 (Wednesdays@ 4:30pm - 6:00pm) Casa del Prado Building

Students will learn how to sing as an ensemble and tackle simple harmonies in popular songs from the Broadway canon.  This is a terrific opportunity for children who want to pursue choral singing or musical theatre.  A brief concert will be presented at the end of the session for family and friends.

Learn the foundations of vocal technique including breath support, tone, pitch and expression while singing songs from exotic island musicals including South Pacific, Once on this Island, Moana, Gilligan’s Island and more.

Training : Aide-in-Training

For Ages 15 - 18

January 19, 2019-February 23, 2019 (Saturdays@ 9:00am - 11:00am) Casa del Prado Building

This class is the first step in a training series for potential hire at Junior Theatre as a teaching aide. This class is mandatory for students under 18 who wish to apply to be an aide. This class will cover policies, procedures, inclusion training and how to work with children. Attendance is mandatory and no conflicts will be accepted. Test on final day is a requirement. Part two will be an internship in the Spring, first session for potential hire is Summer 2019. Students must be 15 years or older to participate

Dance : Polynesian Dance Workshop

For Ages 3rd - 12th

December 10, 2018-December 11, 2018 (Monday & Tuesday 5:30pm - 7:00pm) Casa del Prado Building

This workshop designed to introduce vocabulary and choreography that will be used in upcoming Moana rehearsals, and will also appeal to students looking to widen their dance skills with dance styles from Samoa, Fiji and Tonga. Will include a brief intro into Siva Samoa, Meke, Tau’olunga, poi balls and other traditional Polynesian performance props.

Acting : Inside the Mask Workshop

For Ages 7th - 12th

Throughout theatre history, masks have been used by actors as a tool for creating characters. Experience the basics of neutral theatre mask work in a guided session aimed to boost creativity and partnering work. Skills will include mask work, character development, imagination, emotional work, partner work, and focus.

Music/Singing : Music Reading Essentials for Theatre Workshop

For Ages 7th - 12th

January 19, 2019-January 26, 2019 (Saturdays@ 11:00am - 1:00pm) Casa del Prado Building

This workshop is perfect for students who want a deep dive into music theory for the purposes of musical theatre. Musical theatre casts are often expected to learn ensemble songs quickly without individual support from music directors, and for those who don't read music this can be a challenge. Advance your triple threat status by learning to read the basics of musical notation, including counting, entrances and cut-offs, listening for orchestral cues, picking out harmonies, and more.

Acting : The Professional Artist – What to Expect in a College Theatre Program and Beyond Workshop

For Ages 10th - 12th

March 2, 2019-March 9, 2019 (Saturdays@ 10:00am - 12:00pm) Casa del Prado Building

An advanced workshop for the high school student considering theatre school and a career in the arts, these sessions will include a mock audition followed by an in-depth discussion of schools, work and life as a professional artist.
