Summer Camps 2018

Balboa Park

June 11, 2018 - August 24, 2018

All Balboa Park Campus camps are held in the Casa del Prado Building. Camp specifics are subject to change without notice.

*KinderStar campers must be 5 years old by 9.1.18. Please register you child based on their grade level in the fall of 2018.

**Camp hours are from 9:00am to 3:00pm, Monday through Friday. Campers will have four classes each day: acting, voice, dance, and a theatre specialty topic. Campers will be split into teams based on the grade they are entering in the fall. It is not possible for campers to be placed on a team that is above their grade level. There are presentations for families on the last day of every camp session.

***Aftercare is available daily for $15 per day from 3-5pm. There is no pre-registration required.

Cancellations/Refunds: Cash refunds (less $25.00 service charge per child, per class or camp) are available up until seven days prior to the start of class or camp, after which time no refund is given. If Junior Theatre must cancel a class or camp due to insufficient enrollment, any tuition paid will be refunded in full. Note: Once a child has auditioned for a play in Balboa Park, there are no refunds or tuition credit granted. Any discounts must be taken at the time of the order; no retroactive discounts or refunds/credits will be granted.

This camp is geared towards more experienced students who want a faster paced "rehearsal & performance" experience. Beauty is in the eye of the ogre in Shrek The Musical JR., based on the Oscar-winning Dreamworks Animation film and fantastic Broadway musical.  It's a "big bright beautiful world" as everyone's favorite ogre, Shrek, leads a cast of fairy tale misfits on an adventure to rescue a princess and find true acceptance.  Part romance and part twisted fairy tale, Shrek JR. is an irreverently fun show with a powerful message for the whole family.

For Ages 4th - 6th Grade

August 6, 2018-August 10, 2018 (Monday - Friday 9am - 3pm) Casa del Prado Building

This camp is geared towards more experienced students who want a faster paced "rehearsal & performance" experience. This powerful adaptation, focuses on the humor, warmth, and emotional intensity of Katherine Paterson’s Newbery Award-winning novel. Jesse, alienated from the pragmatism of his family and rural Virginian culture, draws and dreams of becoming something special. Leslie, the new girl from the city and the ultimate outsider, opens a world of imagination, art, and literature for him. Together they create Terabithia, a fantasy kingdom where they are safe from those who don’t understand them. Their friendship grows as Jesse’s world expands. When tragedy strikes, the strength gained in Terabithia takes Jesse forward on his own and lets him share the magic of his dreams.

Students interested in all that it takes to make a play happen will appreciate the chance to try their hands at lighting, sound, costumes, set and props. Students will hear from professional designers, and get to try out a little of each technical theatre area. A great choice for students that love to crew JT shows

Summer Camps : Session 8 – Acting Academy – As You Like It

For Ages 7th - 12th Grade

August 13, 2018-August 17, 2018 (Monday - Friday 9am - 3pm) Casa del Prado Building

This camp is geared towards more experienced students who want a faster paced "rehearsal & performance" experience. A comedy by William Shakespeare follows its heroine Rosalind as she flees persecution in her uncle's court, accompanied by her cousin Celia to find safety and, eventually, love, in the Forest of Arden. In the forest, they encounter a variety of memorable characters, notably the melancholy traveller Jaques who speaks many of Shakespeare's most famous speeches. Jaques provides a sharp contrast to the other characters in the play, always observing and disputing the hardships of life in the country. The play remains a favorite among audiences.

Summer Camps : Session 8 – Musical Theatre Intensive – Newsies Experience

For Ages 4th - 6th Grade

August 13, 2018-August 17, 2018 (Monday - Friday 9am - 3pm) Casa del Prado Theatre

This camp is geared towards more experienced students who want a faster paced "rehearsal & performance" experience. Calling all dancers and singers. This musical theatre intensive camp will move fast through the week, putting together a mini musical version of Newsies, including big dance numbers, ensemble group numbers and selected solos. Bring dance clothes and shoes (jazz & tap shoes recommended)

Throw Back Week - what’s old is new again….it happens in fashion and music. We will take a trip down memory lane and teach students that before Jay-Z released a song called “Hard-knock life” it was better known as a song from the musical Annie. We hope this nostalgic look to the past will even inspire our new artist to appreciate revivals!

For Ages 7th - 12th Grade

This camp is geared towards more experienced students who want a faster paced "rehearsal & performance" experience. Smokey Joe's Cafe is a musical revue showcasing 39 pop standards, including rock and roll and rhythm and blues songs written by songwriters Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. The review will showcase the many talents of our students with high energy singing and dancing. Students should bring dance clothes to camp and come prepared with 16 bars of a musical theatre song to sing on the first day of camp!

Pinkalicious can't stop eating pink cupcakes despite warnings from her parents. Her pink indulgence lands her at the doctor's office with Pinkititis, an affliction that turns her pink from head to toe - a dream come true for this pink loving enthusiast. But when her hue goes too far, only Pinkalicious can figure out a way to get out of this predicament

One singular sensation, this iconic Broadway show made Michael Bennett a star for his unique and physical choreographic storytelling. This class will recreate original choreography and is best suited for experienced dancers.

The series chronicles the adventures of the title character and his various friends in the fictional underwater city of Bikini Bottom. Most characters are anthropomorphic sea creatures based on real-life species. We will bring these friends to life in this aquatic adventure

In the process, he learns valuable lessons, finding a love of learning.

Tacky the penguin is "a very odd bird".  All of his companions dress fancy, march in neat rows, sing pretty songs and dive gracefully.  Tacky does all those things but not neat, or pretty, or gracefully like them so they do not like him.  Lets join Tacky to see how his adventures begin and end.

"What is that director thinking?" This acting/directing class teaches you how to think like a director and learn the secret to landing the part every time. Improve your acting skills while also learning the ABC's of directing. Each student in this class will have the opportunity to direct as well as act. As a director, the students will examine, block, design and create their very own piece. On the final day, students will perform in each other’s scenes as well as see their own directing visions come to life.
