All Balboa Park Campus classes are held in the Casa del Prado Building. Class specifics are subject to change without notice.
Cancellations/Refunds: Cash refunds (less $25.00 service charge per child, per class or camp) are available up until seven days prior to the start of classes, after which time no refund is given. Singing : Acting the Song

For Ages 7th - 12th

January 18, 2020-March 21, 2020 (Saturdays@ 10:00am - 12:00pm) Casa del Prado Building

Back by popular demand, Mr. BJ will lead students through the exercise of performing musical theatre with both strong vocal and acting technique. This workshop focuses on activities which accomplish both and result in a strong polished song which not only sounds good but also communicates emotion and messaging through the body, face and vocal nuances.

Learn the foundations of vocal technique including breath support, tone, pitch and expression while singing songs from the most celebrated Broadway star of our time, Lin-Manuel Miranda, known for acting in, writing, and composing smash hit musicals including Hamilton, In the Heights, Bring it On, Moana and more.

Dance : Dance Theatre – Disney Mashup

For Ages 4th - 6th

January 18, 2020-March 21, 2020 (Saturdays@ 9:00am - 10;30am) Casa del Prado Building

Students will explore a variety of dance genres and techniques through songs and scenes from Disney favorites. Each class meeting promises a new adventure exploring the tales of Simba, Belle, Aladdin, Pocahontas, and other leading characters from Disney hits. Students will learn new choreography and create character development through physicality.

Dance : Happy Feet

For Ages Pre Kindergarten - Kindergarten

January 18, 2020-March 21, 2020 (Saturdays @ 10:30am - 11:30am) Casa del Prado Building

Are your child’s feet always on the go? This physically active class will explore movement through rhythm and dance. Simple choreography incorporating specific props will be utilized. All of this fun and activity will culminate in a presentation on the last day of class.

Dance : You’re the Star

For Ages 1st - 3rd

January 18, 2020-March 21, 2020 (Saturdays @ 11:30am - 12:30am) Casa del Prado Building

A great class for kinesthetic learners! Children will experience story dramatization, told through dance! Very improvisational, and designed to increase imagination, this class allows students to create short story lines that will then be “choreographed” by the young dancers. A great opportunity to explore how movement relates to action and feeling.

Dance : Dance Theatre – Hairspray

For Ages 4th - 6th

Shake and shimmy! Students will explore a variety of dance genres and techniques through choreography and scenes from Hairspray, a Tony-winning show is chalk full of high energy ensemble numbers and 60's style choreography. Shake and shimmy your way through this fun class while learning how to dance in character!

Dance : High School Musicals

For Ages 7th - 12th

January 19, 2020-March 22, 2020 (Sundays@ 10:30am - 12:30pm) Casa del Prado Building

Have fun dancing at the hop, the prom, or the winter formal! Designed for our more experienced dance students, this class develops dance technique while creating new choreography based on dance numbers from some of Broadway’s most popular shows with plots set in High Schools, including  Heathers, Grease, Mean Girls and other hit musicals.

Dance : Story Dance – The Little Mermaid

For Ages Pre Kindergarten - Kindergarten

January 19, 2020-March 22, 2020 (Sundays@ 12:30am - 1:30pm) Casa del Prado Building

Come dance with us under the sea! In this class, students will explore creative dance movements through scenes and music from The Little Mermaid. Portray characters including Ariel, Sebastian, Eric, Skuttle and others while learning basic dance steps, coordination and flexibility.

For Very Young Students : Toddler & Me Imagination Theatre

Brand New Class! Enjoy some bonding time with your toddler, ages 18 months up to 3 years, as a Junior Theatre Teaching Artist guides you through a journey of imaginative play, pretend, and storytelling, as the foundations of theatre. You and your child will engage in visuals, sounds and tactile exercises that develop language, dexterity, and social development.

Just in time for winter, this class for our youngest dancers will create movement and exploration around the idea of snow and the cold outdoors. Since there’s no real snow in San Diego, this class will rely on imagination and sound effects to encourage storytelling!

Pirate adventures on the high seas, princesses in peril and those who save the day! What better way to learn acting techniques than through portraying dynamic characters from exciting stories? Young actors, join us as we create scenes, speaking and movement based on Winnie the Pooh, a children’s literature favorite. This class provides the basis for acting study while covering themes from the book including friendship, happiness and sharing.

Using The Secret Garden as a basis for theatrical creation, this class will explore historical England through the story of a young girl getting to know her new family and herself. The development of short theatre pieces will challenge creative students who love to act. Students in this class will participate as producer, actor, director and designer.

this class for teens is the best of both worlds! Take your acting skills to the next level by learning to master serious drama along with hilarious comedy skills all in one class. Scene studies will include Shakespeare, Arthur Miller, Tenessee Williams, August Wilson, Tracy Letts, Del Shores and more. Select scenes will be presented on the final day.

Try on a new character each day! Learn the foundations of acting and how to use a script to find clues when creating a character. This class is great for students who love to experiment and play pretend, with an opportunity to be someone new each class!

Workshop : Advanced Scene Study, One Acts

This workshop is for serious acting students who want to explore some of scene study through one acts from recent playwrights. Students will devote time to a deeper connection and the rich use of language, layered characters, mature content and themes, resonance and imagery, and so much more!    

Technical : Set Design 101

For Ages 7th - 12th

March 14, 2020-March 21, 2020 (Saturdays @ 10:0am - 12:00am) Casa del Prado Building

Learn how to bring a story to life through creating the environment on stage. Students will learn design concepts and work together to brainstorm, research, sketch ideas, and create a scenic model for a play and present their final project. This workshop will will be very hands on.  Bring your designing mindset!  This is for all levels of designers; art skills are not required.

Acting/Movement : Singing While Dancing!

For Ages 5th - 12th

January 26, 2020-February 2, 2020 (Sundays @ 9:00am - 11:00am) Casa del Prado Building

Most musical theatre repertoire is rich in large ensemble numbers in which actors must sing and dance at the same time in order to convey the story line. This workshop is dedicated to diving into this unique skill set that only musical theatre performers use! Discuss breath control, marking, body mapping, energy conservation, and how facial expressions and diction play into mastering this skill.

Explore theatre together, as a Junior Theatre Teaching Artist guides you and your budding artist through a journey of imaginative play, pretend, and storytelling. Workshop : Shakespeare Scenes & Festival

March 28, 2020-April 18, 2020 (Saturdays @ 10:00am - 12:00pm) Casa del Prado Building

Back by popular demand, “Mr. Justin” Lang will be leading an adventurous group of Junior Theatre actors to the 15th Annual San Diego Shakespeare Society Festival on Saturday April 18th in Balboa Park. JT campers will perform monologues, scenes, dances, and music alongside their peers and compete against other schools in San Diego County for top prizes and awards. This camp is for driven actors that want to feel the rush of performing outdoors and experience a festival unlike any other for young actors!

This workshop will meet March 28th, April 4th & 10th from 10am - 12pm. On festival day the class will be from 8am - 4pm.

Workshop : Stage Makeup Workshop

For Ages 5th - 12th

May 2, 2020-May 9, 2020 (Saturdays@ 10:00am - 12:00pm) Casa del Prado Building

The stage make-up artist creates magic that helps the audience believe in a character. Students in this class will learn basics in stage make-up and learn to create characters using age, animal scar and other worldly designs. A basic make up kit is included in the cost of the class.

Workshop : Latin Dance Intensive

For Ages 5th - 12th

April 18, 2020-April 25, 2020 (Saturdays@ 10:00am - 12:00am) Casa del Prado Building

This class is designed to help students prepare for the upcoming auditions and production of West Side Story this spring, our instructor will take students on a deep dive into dance techniques drawn from Latin styles, including the mambo, cha-cha, sharp kicks, staccato and syncopated rhythms. Whether you are auditioning or not, students will enjoy this high energy workshop with Latin flair!

For Ages 1st - 3rd

April 7, 2020-June 9, 2020 (Tuesdays @ 4:30 - 5:30pm) Casa del Prado Building

Young actors in this class will use their imagination to bring plays to life. A variety of source material will be used, from literature, to original ideas. Guided by the teaching artist, children will stage several plays over the course of the session, and present their favorite to a live audience on the last day of class.

April 7, 2020-June 9, 2020 (Tuesdays 4:00-6:00pm) Casa del Prado Building

Social media is here to stay and luckily so is theatre. This session Junior Theatre’s new acting class for teens will be connecting the two together.  Through the lens of relationship and social skills using their bodies, imaginations and powerful,  important voice students will use theatrical skills for enhancing their social media presence. In this class we will cultivate relationships, respect diverse viewpoints, communicate effectively, and understand the importance of real world connections while social networking. Working together using theatre games and exercises students will develop the most thought provoking and theatrical Tik Toks, will bring Instagram posts to life, and experience SnapChat diversity costume challenges. Bring your phone charger!

Acting : A New Play, My Way!

Pick a script, choose costumes and props, and act out the parts! Students will have a chance to try their hand at all that it takes to make a play happen. Family and friends will be the VIP audience on the last day of class and see the finished product.

Get wild and wacky with the adventures of The Jungle Book!  This class will explore character, storytelling, costumes and props as artists develop short theatre pieces based on the beloved story.  Students in this class will participate as producer, actor, director and designer,  as they create their own stories based on The Jungle Book.  Great as a stand alone class or for students who are planning to audition for Junior Theatre’s upcoming summer production of The Jungle Book on our main stage.

Explore imagination and fantasy through the worlds of Roald Dahl.  This class will explore character, storytelling, costumes and props as artists develop short theatre pieces based on James and The Giant Peach by this beloved author.  Students in this class will participate as producer, actor, director and designer,  as they create their own stories and present them to parents in a culmination at the end of the class.

Explore a variety of acting techniques and develop your sensibilities as an actors! Throughout theatre history, renowned artists such as Anton Chekhov, Sanford Meisner, and Anne Bogart have developed acting technique to access character and story in an organic and authentic way.  This class will allow students to try a variety of acting styles and see what fits their personal aesthetic.

Create stories at the speed of imagination! Students will explore storytelling through improv as they engage their body, voice and imagination. Students will explore improvisation through theatre games and exercises in a fun and supportive environment.  This class focuses on the value of team work as it develops a more playful, spontaneous and flexible actor. On the last day of class students will perform in an improv showcase for family and friends.

Singing : Little Broadway Crooners

Our Broadway Crooners class explores the young singer’s tools of body, voice, and imagination to share their stories. while singing songs from productions currently playing on Broadway, including Aladdin, Lion King, Frozen, Harry Potter and more favorites.  Students will build performing skills through interactive theatre games and exercises.  We’ll laugh, we’ll giggle, We’ll sing!

Back by popular demand, in this course students are learning to combine the singer’s tools of vocal technique with the actor’s tools of intention and objective to tell stories and create a theatrical reality. This workshop focuses on activities to create a strong polished vocal performance communicating the inner life of the character.

Singing : See it – Sing it!

For Ages 4th - 6th

April 9, 2020-June 11, 2020 (Thursdays @ 4:30pm - 6:00pm) Casa del Prado Building

Students will be learning how to read their favorite songs and notes on a page. On the final day of class students will present a sight reading demonstration as well as musical numbers that feature every students creative energy. This NEW class will build sight reading skills for developing singers and will explore the rhythmic and melodic elements of music.

Singing : Songs You Know By Heart

For Ages 7th - 12th

April 11, 2020-June 13, 2020 (Saturdays@ 10:00am - 12:00pm) Casa del Prado Building

Find the emotional truth behind some of Broadway’s most memorable songs. Explore the drama and powerful vocal techniques of the protagonist coming to a major realization. This class will examine some of the most emotional numbers in Broadway history. We will look at what makes these pieces capture audiences, and how to perform this type of song in a sincere way that honors the truth of these moments, all the while practicing proper breathing, vocal tone, projection and resonance.

Singing : Mini Musical: Pinkalicious & Peterific

For Ages 4th - 6th

April 12, 2020-June 14, 2020 (Sundays@ 10:30am - 11:30am) Casa del Prado Building

Jump into the zany world of Pinkalicious Pinkerton and her younger brother Peter!  Basic music skills meet with play production to create this fun class. Students will rehearse a mini version of Pinkalicious as they explore how the skills of the actor meet proper singing technique. Students will love working together to create a product for the last class.

Singing : Little Voices; Big Shows

For Ages 1st - 3rd

April 12, 2020-June 14, 2020 (Sundays@ 11:30am - 12:30pm) Casa del Prado Building

Raise those little voices to the rafters with Broadway show tunes! Students will learn songs from musicals that feature children, as well as practicing proper singing technique. Some stage movement will be incorporated, as musical numbers are rehearsed for an informal performance on the last day of class.

Dance : Creative Dance

For Ages 1st - 3rd

April 6, 2020-June 8, 2020 (Mondays@4:30pm - 5:30pm) Casa del Prado Building

An exciting adventure for artists in grades 1-3, and  explores the dancer’s tools of body, and imagination to share their stories.  These artists explore stories, literature, and their own ideas through creative movement. This class will help each student access his or her own creativity through movement, story dramatization, theatre crafts and the use of costumes and props. A supportive, nurturing environment gives children the venue for developing social skills and a healthy release of emotion.  

Dance : Dip your Toe! – Musical Theatre Dance

For Ages 4th - 6th

Explore a wide variety of styles: jazz, lyrical, ballet, hip-hop, and tap as you work your way through popular Broadway musicals. This class will introduce artists to multiple styles of dance and popular Broadway choreographers.

Explore creative movement as we explore tempo, timing, shape, and emotion.  This class will get the creative juices flowing and the heart pumping.  Join us for the end of the session to see your little dancers perform a few combinations!

Come dance with us in the Kingdom of Arendelle! In this class, students will explore creative dance movements through scenes and music from the new hit sequel, Frozen 2. Portray characters including Elsa, Anna, Olaf, Sven and others while learning basic dance steps, coordination and flexibility.

Students will explore a variety of dance genres and techniques through choreography and scenes from The Lion King, an award-winning production and movie chalk full of unique movements, mirroring animal characterizations and drawing on folk dance from several African cultures.

Have fun dancing through the magical land of Oz! Designed for our more experienced dance students, this class develops dance technique while creating new choreography based on dance numbers from some of Broadway’s most popular shows, including Wicked, The Wiz, and The Wizard of Oz.

Come dance with us in an enchanted castle, where candles, clocks and teacups come alive! In this class, students will explore creative dance movements through scenes and music from Beauty & The Beast. Portray characters including Belle, Mrs. Potts, the Beast, Lumiere and others while learning basic dance steps, coordination and flexibility.

For Ages Kindergarten - 6th Grade

April 13, 2020-April 17, 2020 (Monday - Friday, 9:00am - 3:00pm) Casa del Prado Building

**Camp hours are from 9:00am to 3:00pm, Monday through Friday. Campers will have four classes each day: acting, voice, dance, and a theatre specialty topic. Campers will be split into teams based on the grade they are entering in the fall. It is not possible for campers to be placed on a team that is above their grade level. There are presentations for families on the last day of every camp session.

***Aftercare is available daily for $15 per day from 3-5pm. There is no pre-registration required.
