Kerry Slattery

Kerry joined Junior Theatre in 1956, and at age 13 in 1957 was cast in the title role of \”Cinderella\”, an experience which caused her to realize she was destined for a career in theatre and she set about to prepare for it. At Junior Theatre, she subsquently played the role of Beauty in \”Beauty and the Beast\” (double cast with JT alumna Sharon Barcom Hoffer!), and then appeared in a number of San Diego community theatre productions while still in Junior High. rn rnHer family moved away from San Diego with her career Navy father, and she continued to act in community theatre, and studied at the theatre department at San Francisco State (later getting a theatre degree from Cleveland State University). She returned to San Diego briefly to attend a semester at San Diego State, playing the lead in \”The Queen and the Rebels\” and to work as an apprentice at the last season of the (old) La Jolla Playhouse, where she played the bride in \”Member of the Wedding,\” starring the remarkable Ethel Waters. Two years later she joined Equity in a remarkable Los Angeles production of \”Medea\” with Dame Judith Anderson. rn rnShe worked professionally as an actress for 24 years–in New York, Los Angeles and regional theatre — including 4 national tours and over 100 commercials. Somewhere in the middle, she returned to San Diego again and received a Master\’s Degree in Linguistics from U.C. San Diego.rn rnKerry retired from acting in 1989 to work on the production side of the film industry, and in 1996 opened an independent bookstore in Los Angeles — Skylight Books — where she continues proudly as co-owner and General Manager.rn rnShe credits San Diego Junior Theatre, especially under the direction of the inspirational Jack Harrington, with instilling in her at an early stage an understanding of professional work habits as well as a lifelong appreciation for the joy and richness of theatre.rn
