Class Schedule Fall 2008

All La Jolla YMCA Firehouse classes are held at the Firehouse on the corner of Wall and Herschel in the village of La Jolla at 7877 Herschel Avenue. Class specifics are subject to change without notice. Registration is accepted through the first week of the session. However, we are strict about class size limits, and classes do fill. There will be no class on November 11th, Tuesday prices have been adjusted accordingly. Please register early for best selection. Acting
Tales from Afar for ages 5-7 Register 

In this creative drama style class, students will be exposed to children’s literature from around the world. Learning stories through acting them out will give students a boost in literacy, as well as an appreciation for multi-culturalism. Each week will feature new tales, and new roles for children to play. Final class will feature a presentation of favorite tales

Story Drama for ages 4-5 Register 

Each week of this class will focus on a different story, tale or fable, and students will be on their feet acting out the roles. Some visual art projects enhance the theatrical nature of the dramas, and students will put a variety of skills to use in telling the stories

Play Production: Busytown for ages 8-18 Register 

Rehearsal for Busytown. Play Production meets Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. To be part of this show you must register and pay for Play Production in La Jolla before you can receive an audition time. If you are not cast in the show you may transfer your payment to another class or get a complete refund. You must be between eight and eighteen to audition.

Scenes from the Mainstage for ages 11-15 Register 

Actors will become familiar with the plays that will be presented at Junior Theatre in the coming season. A great way to prepare to be an actor, crew or audience member in this season of hit shows. Scene study and cold reading techniques will be covered as students work with scenes from JT’s ‘08-’09 season. Due to the nature of a scene study class, consistent attendance is mandatory.

Acting 1A: Creating a Character for ages 8-10 Register 

This class is the place to start for students who are serious about learning the craft of acting. Students will learn the basic building block of acting, creating a believable character. Actors will be challenged to use their skills to create a variety of characters that range in age, type, personality and background. Using their imagination and some research techniques, students will learn to come up with characters quickly.

Intro to Acting for ages 6-8 Register 

Students in this developmental group are beginning to understand the relationship between actor-audience. This class will teach them the skills necessary for future success on stage. Basic theatre terminology, stage positions and ensemble techniques are taught in a fun, non-competitive setting.

Acting Out! for ages 5-8 Register 

One of our most popular offerings, this class breaks down acting techniques into practice with the voice, face and body. Students will begin to develop their own internal resources for acting, while having a great time in active acting exercises. A fast-paced and very fun class.

Animal Tales for ages 4-5 Register 

A chance to explore wonderful literature that features animals! Through the use of the actor’s tools of voice and body, students will get a chance to create plays and become many different animal characters. Informal open sharing on the last day of class will give parents the opportunity to witness these wild and wacky animals!

Dramatic Adventures for ages 6-8 Register 

Students will spend the session exploring great characters and stories from around the world. Class members will recreate stories and get the chance to portray larger-than-life characters from stories that have been passed down through generations. Reading skills are not a requirement, just a great imagination and sense of adventure!
